Dell Inc is a multinational computer technology company whose main headquarters are in Texas in the United States. Dell is listed on NASDAQ as DELL. The main focus is computers but with a few other home consumer electronics like TVs and printers. But what is Dell, really?
Dell Inc is the come to fruition of the dreams of one Michael Dell who was a student at the University of Texas in Austin. Let’s see how his simple dream became the giant computer corporation that is Dell today.
Big Dreams
Michael Dell’s business acumen and interest in computers began from an early age. At 7 he already had a calculator and by 15 he had an Apple II. He went to memorial High School and during the holidays he would make a few dollars on the side doing subscriptions for the Houston Post. Later he figured that new Houston home owners and the freshly married could buy subscriptions so he zeroed in on this ripe market. In a year, he had made 18 grand, a figure that was unthinkable by the standards of that time. While his peers were asking for pennies to buy candy from their parents, Michael was busy investing earnings in the stock market and in rare metals.

The Birth of What Is Dell
Back when a computer was either an IBM PC or an IBM PC Clone, Michael had started a computer company from his dorm room while at the University of Texas. He called it PC’s Limited and its main purpose was to sell upgrades for IBM Clones. Later, he started to assemble components, build and sell computers. Business picked up and his relatives funded him 300,000 USD to pump into his venture. The result was Michael dropping out of school to give full attention to PC’s Limited. Pretty much the same story of other big names in the computer world like Bill gates and Steve Jobs. The year was 1984. The following year, PC’s Limited designed its first computer, the Turbo PC, which retailed for $795 USD. That year alone, PC’s Limited registered a staggering 73 million USD in sales. The company became Dell Computer Corporation in ’88 marking the start of what is dell today. Dell Computer Corporation delved into the global market and went public with a phenomenal market capitalization. At its IPO it had a market capitalization of 30 million USD and this figure doubled and went over to 80 million by the end of the year. Michael Dell became the youngest CEO to have a company listed in the Fortune 500 magazine when Dell was listed among the world’s largest 500 corporations in 1992.
Steady Growth
Dell Computer Corporation launched a website on which to sell computers in 1996. The company grew steadily after that, through acquiring other companies and broadening its product range. Dell acquired ConvergeNet technologies in 1999 and by 2002 its product portfolio included TVs, printers and portable music devices. The diversion from traditionally manufacturing computers was marked by the rebranding of Dell Computer Corporation as Dell Inc.
The 2004-2007 Bump
This period was marked by an ambitious acquisition of Alienware, the world’s largest assembler of custom power PC’s and the stepping down of founder Michael Dell as CEO. Believing the company to have firmly established itself in the computer world, Michael decided to leave the job to long-serving employee Kevin Rollins. Dell’s prominence in the market left with the schemer, however, as sales especially in the budget OC segment took a downward sloping curve. This prompted him to reclaim the reigns and announce an ambitious rebirth programme he christened ‘Dell 2.0’.

Dell 2.0
Dell 2.0 was characterized by strategies of cutting on costs which included a major retrenchment of employees and acquiring new companies with established means of production. EqualLogic was purchased in 2008 followed by Perot Systems in 2009. EqualLogic was and is Dell’s entry into the storage devices market through iSCSI. Perot Systems on the other hand provided application development and technology outsourcing. Many companies have also followed this route as part of Michael’s restructuring plans. They include KACE Networks, a company that dealt in Systems Management Appliances and Boomi a S-a-a-S provider.
Products
Dell Inc.’s flagship products are computers: notebooks, Netbooks, desktops and storage servers. Most renowned are the Latitude series of business laptops and the Optilex range of desktops. Their business severs come under the PowerEdge brand.
Other products include USB mass storage, printers, LCD TVs and computer monitors.
